“The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers.”
– William Shakespeare, Henry VI, Part 2
The work of a lawyer is one of the most despised in the America. It has always been. A 2013 article by Above The Law editor, Staci Zaretsky, claims that less one fifth of the American population thinks that lawyers contribute significantly to society. This is unfortunate, thinks New York based corporate lawyer, Hartley Bernstein. He says that lawyers are essential to the smooth functioning of today’s society - despite their despised status.
Hating lawyers is a long held tradition. It will not go away anytime soon. But this has not stopped Bernstein from trying. In this blog, the veteran lawyer with over 35 years of experience, introduces readers to three lawyers, who are widely held in positive light. The blog shows all lawyers are not bad and there are already many lawyers, whom people love and admire:
(a) Mahatma Gandhi
Gandhi was an iconic lawyer-turned-politician in India, who inspired a whole generation of leaders - from Martin Luther King, Jr. to Nelson Mandela. He is probably the most loved politician in the world. Yet, very few people are aware that he started his journey to greatness as a lawyer. He fought against discrimination in South Africa when he was there providing legal services to an Indian firm. It was much later in his career, that he joined politics and became a full-fledged politician.
(b) John Grisham
Anyone who loves legal thrillers is aware of John Grisham. This lawyer-turned-author is one of the most loved and popular voices of contemporary American literature. He has authored more than dozen books, many of them have been best sellers. At least eight of his books have been made into films. Grisham’s books revolve around courtrooms. Yet, he describes the legal proceedings in such a poetic way that people have come to love him.
(c ) Barack Obama
Obama may be a divisive figure in modern America, yet everyone will agree of his honesty and hardwork. Here is a politician, who was a lawyer. He learnt law before jumping into politics and becoming the first black president of the United States. He has been elected twice; showing that people do not always hate lawyers.
Hartley Bernstein can cite many names. Yet, the length of this blog will not permit that. So here is a conclusion: legal profession is like any other in America. It has good and bad people. All not are not bad. The existence of several popular admirable lawyers proves it.
